I was on Twitter and I saw that one of my favorite Singaporean bloggers, XiaXue, tweeted regarding her most recent cover shoot.
Here is her tweet:
Did homegirl really just say Adele only gets to grace covers because she is fat? Oh, wait no it is to make a point. I don’t think she realizes that Adele is a singer, she has a phenomenal voice. I watched her in concert last year at San Diego State’s Open Air Theater. Let me just say, Adele sounds exactly like she does in her album. So if I am getting this right, XiaXue claims she gets to be on covers now because she lost weight, and that Adele gets to be on covers to make a point about being fat.
Adele vs. Xiaxue? Not even a comparison. Sorry XiaXue, but you are just a beauty blogger. Sure you do covers and you are in a few Michelle Phan videos and you are a big deal in Singapore. When it comes down to it you are just a blogger. Adele is kind of a big deal. I doubt the media only highlights her because she is fat…
Read XiaXue’s posts on Adele here
In her blog post Xiaxue rambles on and on about how Adele is a hypocrite for saying she doesn’t strive to be on magazines,to be skinny or have her tits and ass hanging out like Katy Perry or Lady Gaga. I think the issue with her post is Xiaxue is taking everything from context. I think it comes down to the media. Our media loves to sensationalize people for what identifies them. Whether it is because you are skinny Asian girl with pink hair, a fat British singer, a black professional golfer or an Asian basketball player, the media likes to have an identifier for who they are talking about. So yes, Adele probably gets asked about her weight and social pressures in every interview she does for a magazine. Xiaxue is an idiot if she thinks that is the only thing a magazine is going to focus on when they interview her.
I think in reference to the Katy Perry and Lady Gaga bash: No Xiaxue, she wasn’t bashing them for being skinny and flaunting their bodies. I interpret it as she is flaunting her music, and she doesnt need gimmicky stage props and outlandish Red Carpet outfits to get attention. The world isn’t divided into skinny and fat.
Let’s not forget that the media is notorious for Photoshopping women to look like people who don’t really exist. Adele is a fat, curvy, thick woman in the spotlight for the world to see. Obviously, there are going to be people out there who are self proclaimed doctors and think she needs to lose weight because she is unhealthy. But I interpret her “I never want to be skinny” less as an insult to slim and thin women and more as a retaliation to social norms. Not that she never wants to be skinny, but that she isn’t pressured by society, what Karl Lagerfeld, you or anyone else says about her body or what she SHOULD look like.
**these are my interpretations, what Adele actually means, hell if I know. But there is more to an interview than what a journalist chooses to highlight or what quote a blogger chooses to put next to a picture on the web.**
Or maybe, she knows Adele is quite popular and by bashing on someone a lot of people love she will get more hits? Either way. I just bought into it by blogging about her, and in all honesty Adele is a talented vocalist and Xiaxue is a beauty blogger.

Actually i read that post from xiaxue when it first came out and I have to say i agree with it comepletely. The vast majority of what she says makes complete sense! And this is coming from a 170 pound girl so its not because i am anti-fat or anything.
I think both are nice and beautiful. So who finds the thin body ugly? Be honest and step forward please! Anyway, I just wanted to state my opinion. Reading Xiaxues blog raised emotions inside me I had to give my opinion as well. At first I attempted to comment on her blog… but the comment got to long so I decided to blog myself about it instead. And just to make sure… I know many overweight people, male and female, and I have many overweight friends. I don’t care about their weight as they have wonderful characters (which is why they are my friends). Also, they never comment on my weight so they don’t seem to care either. Weight is something that everybody is responsible for themselves, therefore I don’t judge on anybody about it. It just sickens me when people online start bashing other people, while sitting safely behind their screen (or in Adeles case, her hypocrisy kinda pays out for her… sad to see someone with such a talent to be such a horrible person and then being idolized about it…). I can’t stand when people critize each others weight and appearance in such manners. This goes to all people, beautiful or ugly, slim or overwight, tall or short! Btw I think it’s not nice to call overweight people fat and thin people skinny. Both is kinda unfriendly and some might take it as an insult… To end this post in the cheesy way: Just love yourself and if you can’t, due to weight issues, just pull yourself together and do something about it. Never bring others down in a rude and disgusting way as it’s not up to you to judge their body… be it slim or big. Au revoir!
Xiaxue is an idiot. I never understood why she has such quite the following. Pretty much everyone has heard of Adele. So Xiaxue who?
It just bugs me that she questions an artist’s talent when she herself just write for her own blog and tests products… it’s kind of like comparing a car to a wooden pencil.
Everything is xiaxue’s post was true. Adele claimed how her music was for the ears, not eyes, and that she was representing normal women. Yet what average woman looks like that? With the perfect hair and tons of makeup and big lips and eyes. She is a hypocrite. She obviously cares a great deal about her looks, and puts a lot of effort into her appearance. I like her singing, but she shouldn’t go around claiming how “average” she is and how she isn’t interested in looking pretty, when, quite obviously, she is very much interested in it. If you take weight out of the equation, she looks the same as any other starlet.
